Tube Strike Union Boss Wants To Be London MEP

images

The man threatening to bring the London Underground to a standstill is asking residents to vote for him in the European Elections.

Bob Crow, General Secretary of the RMT union, which is planning a 48-hour tube strike, is hoping to represent the capital in Europe.

He is top of the candidate list for the left-wing "No2EU" group which was founded by his union and has the backing of the Communist Party of Britain.

London mayor Boris Johnson has condemned the union's plans for a 2-day strike over jobs and pay, due to begin on Tuesday June 9.

Other candidates standing for fringe parties in London include former miners' leader Arthur Scargill, who is top of the candidate list for the Socialist Labour Party.

But he faces competition from the Socialist Party of Great Britain, which is also standing candidates.

London is currently represented by three Conservative MEPs, three Labour MPs, one Liberal Democrat, one Green and one UKIP MEP.

But the capital's allocation of MEPs is being cut from nine to eight, making it certain that at least one of the parties currently represented in the Strasbourg Parliament will lose a seat.

There has been speculation that disillusionment with the major parties, caused by the expenses scandal, could benefit fringe parties.

The far-right BNP is standing a full slate of candidates led by Barking and Dagenham councillor Robert Bailey.

The BNP describes itself as a party for the "indigenous peoples of these islands", by which it means white people. However, its election campaign has focused on sleaze in Westminster.

Other parties standing include the English Democrats, which campaign for an English Parliament, and the Christian Party, which says it stands for "genuine Christian values and a real moral agenda in the political realm."

A poll by ICM for the Sunday Telegraph - asking people how they would vote in a General Election - put Labour in third place behind the Liberal Democrats.

It gave the Conservatives 40 per cent of the vote, the Lib Dems 25 per cent and Labour 22 per cent.

Gordon Brown has insisted he will not quit however the bad the European result is for Labour.

Asked by the BBC's Andrew Marr if he would stand down if it would help Labour, he said: ""No, because I am dealing with the issues at hand. I am dealing with the economy every day."
