More Than 3,000 Registered Sex Offenders Live In London
Monday, 20 October 2008 20:27

MORE than 3,000 registered sex offenders are currently living in London, the Metropolitan Police have revealed.

And 300 were cautioned of convicted last year for breaching the terms of their registration - for example by failing to inform police when they changed address.

The figures were published in a report designed to highlight the work of police, probation officers and the prison service to protect the public once sex offenders are released back into the community.

Lewisham is the borough with the most registered sex offenders, and is currently home to 190. It is followed by Lambeth, where 177 sex offenders live.

They are monitored by a Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangement - known as MAPPA - which includes a range of law-enforcement agencies working together to share information.

In the past 12 months, 106 sex offenders in the capital have been returned to jail for breaching the terms of their probation, while 19 were jailed for breaking orders laid down by courts designed to stop them offending again, for example by banning them from "loitering near schools or playgrounds".

The report also reveals that 2,792 violent offenders monitored by law enforcement agencies are living in the capital.

The Home Office has announced it is to run pilot schemes revealing the names and personal details of sex offenders to parents who believe their children may be at risk, but not initially in London.

The scheme will operate in Warwickshire, Cleveland, Hampshire and Cambridgeshire, and may eventually be extended across the country if it is successful.

Justice Minister David Hanson said: "The first duty of the Criminal Justice System is to protect the public.

"Putting in place thorough systems to ensure high level vigilance of serious sexual and violent offenders on their release from prison is vital in our work protecting communities from crime.

"The MAPPA system we put in place just seven years ago, with police, probation and other agencies working closely together, has been successful in reducing the risk to the public."

Home Office Minister Alan Campbell added: "The UK is widely recognised as a world leader in its efforts to target, manage and rehabilitate sex offenders, while maximising public safety.

"That is why we recently outlined new measures to strengthen restrictions against child sex offenders, including tightening up the law around Sexual Offences Prevention Orders and Foreign Travel Orders.

"We will legislate for this as soon as possible to ensure that anyone who poses a threat to our children is dealt with firmly."

These figures may seem shocking, but sex offenders have to be released from jail one day. In my view, it is good to know that the police and other services are monitoring them, and being reasonably open about what they are doing.
