Is our beloved Mayor setting his sights on the top job? Boris Johnson recently described claims that Britain was a "broken society" as piffle. But it was his party leader, David Cameron, who made the claim. In fact, the idea is at the heart of Mr Cameron's philosophy. The Tory leader argues that Britain needs a Conservative Government to fix the mess our society is in, just as it needed Margaret Thatcher 30 years ago to fix the economy. And in an interview to be published by Total Politics today (Friday), Mr Johnson is asked whether he hopes, one day, to have the chance to take over at the helm of his party - and potentially as Prime Minister. His answer is that he cannot "foresee the circumstances in which I'll be called to serve". As Sky News' Niall Paterson points out on his blog, this is almost precisely what former Tory Cabinet Minister Michael Heseltine used to reply when asked if he would challenge Lady Thatcher. Of course, Lord Heseltine did eventually mount a challenge, and Thatcher's career was over. Perhaps Boris has the talent and charisma to become Prime Minister. Despite his shambling manner, he certainly has the intellect. But London won't be kind if he doesn't appear totally dedicated to serving our city as Mayor. If he does have further ambitions, his only chance of achieving them is to prove he can run London effectively. As a successful Mayor, Boris may find that new doors open for him once his time in office is over. But to be successful, he needs to focus firmly on the job he's doing right now.
